Florida law provides homeowners with a valuable property tax benefit known as the Homestead Exemption. This exemption can reduce the taxable value of your primary residence by up to $50,000, resulting in lower property taxes.
To qualify, you must own and occupy the property as your permanent residence on January 1st of the year youโre applying. The exemption also makes you eligible for additional protections such as the Save Our Homes assessment limitation.
Eligibility Requirements
- You must be a permanent resident of Florida.
- The property must be your primary residence as of January 1st.
- Proof of residency and other documentation may be required.
Important Notes
If a property is sold, the existing Homestead Exemption and Save Our Homes cap are removed for the new owner starting the next year. A new application is required to establish the exemption and cap again.
